Under the August Lights 2008

An Evening of Art & Food & Entertainment

Amarillo Art Institute presents a preopening visual arts event for August Lights on Friday, August 8th at 7:00 p.m. You have only one opportunity to choose where you will be on 08-08-08, and you won’t want to miss this event. This event itself will truly be a work of art.

Guests will be greeted by valets and taken to the entry of Sunset’s newest addition-an outdoor Sculpture Gallery and Garden-which is under construction. As you enter the doors under the stained glass portico, you will be engulfed in the arts. This preopening event will introduce you to all types of visual arts, from a variety of styles of painting and collage to sculpture and weaving. Artists will be demonstrating their skills throughout the mall and in over 40 individually owned studio/galleries will be open to our guests for their enjoyment. During the cocktail hour, art lovers will stroll the tiled avenues of Sunset Center. Hors d’ouevres and drinks will be served throughout the mall. Artists will be available to answer questions and talk to our guests about the art, their styles, and techniques. Both local and visiting artists will be demonstrating how they create their works of art. Everything from dancers to magicians, musicians and jugglers will be scattered throughout the mall. Rick Howell Workshop

July 22, 2008

Painting in Mogote, Colorado

The Amarillo artists were joined by Kerry Ericksen in Rick’s courtyard Monday morning for coffee and breakfast. We left from there for a short drive to the back roads. It was a typical New Mexico landscape. Even though we were in Colorado, it is a short drive back to New Mexico. We painted Monday morning there, took a break for a couple of hours, then painted the Conejos River in the afternoon. Charles Firestone, Cindy Kelleher, Sandra Pelfrey, Mary Bechtol, Cherine Kuster and Marsha Clements all painted with Rick Howell and Kerry. Michael Pelfrey has been our go-for guy. The rest of the husbands are playing around and working (?). Fly fishing is one of the past times and tourist draws in this area. It is about 5 minutes to the mountains and 5 minutes to the desert. It’s a great place to paint.

Clay Camp for Kids

Creative Fun for the Family

If your kids are suffering from boredom blues this summer you might want to let them take a spin at becoming more creative. The Amarillo Art Institute hosts a number of camps for kids throughout the summer. Full Story

Morten E. Solberg is an artist’s artist. He is versatile in all mediums. He paints in oil, acrylic and watercolor and his techniques range from photo-realism to total abstraction. Years of pursuing his craft via design studios and commercial art brought Mort to the West.

Mort attended The Cleveland Institute Of Art studying painting and design. He shed his commercial ties and concentrated on fine art and has been painting full time since 1970. After moving to Southern California’s Orange County in 1968, he firmly established himself in the art world with memberships in the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, the Society of Animal Artists, Wildlife Artists of the World, Knickerbocker Artists and the Society of Master Impressionists, as a lifetime Master member.

Mort’s interests are many and varied and they are often reflected in his art. American Indian history and culture hold a special allure for Mort, perhaps because his great grandmother was Native American. Norwegian whalers and explorers are among his ancestors. Wildlife, romantic women with parasols, flowers, fisherman, cowboys and nature have provided him with endless colors and shapes with which to design.
